The Cell Phone Directory is Coming - It's Just a Matter of Time
Have you been noticing the rapid cultural transformations? They are everywhere! No doubt, our beliefs and customs are undergoing constant metamorphosis and things we have been taking for granted forever will never be the same. Examples abound.
Take the great institution of the Southern Baptist Church (SBC); the nation's once-largest Protestant denomination is dwindling. These days the SBC leaders are worried and directing criticism inward: the wise ones understand that they need to grow and adapt to the changing times if they want to continue enjoying full congregations. They are hard at work endeavoring to move into the 21st Century, at times having to struggle and debate with nearsighted opposition. They are fighting to survive and prosper, and that calls for serious ideological changes.
The government is also struggling to enter the 21st century with new legislature that addresses all aspects of technological advances and regulates people's use and behavior according to changing societal norms and viewpoints. No change is easy; there is a reason for the phrase "growing pains". There will always be people with an outdated outlook who to try and hold back progress, but it's futile. Take the matter of an online cell phone directory. When will people realize we need one?
Look, there have always been those who valued their privacy more than most, and they kept their land line numbers unlisted in the phone book. They can still have that option with their cell phone number. But the majority want to stay connected; we want to be found! The ban on a public cell phone directory is mostly meant to keep telemarketers off our backs. Guess what? Telemarketers already have our numbers and call our cell phones every day. But the people whom we want to be able to find us are kept in the dark. If there was a cell phone directory, our dwindling social lives would have a better chance.
So, like any other societal change it will take time and more debates and lessons learned the hard way, but a cell phone directory is coming, and hopefully soon.
